Relocating is a lot to coordinate, especially when you’re choosing a home from another city. This checklist covers what I walk my out-of-town clients through.
6–8 weeks out: define the search
- Set your move window. Apartment availability and pricing are tied to specific move-in dates, so a realistic window helps.
- Know your budget. Decide on a total monthly budget that includes the recurring fees, not just base rent.
- List your must-haves. Think about bedrooms, pets, parking, a washer and dryer, a work-from-home space, and outdoor space.
- Map your anchors. Note your workplace, schools, gym, or anywhere you’ll go regularly.
3–6 weeks out: narrow the area
Austin and its surrounding cities feel very different from each other. Start with the area guides, then we’ll talk through the trade-offs on a call: commute, space, price, and lifestyle.
2–4 weeks out: tour
- Virtual tours: I can help you see a community remotely when you can’t visit in person.
- In-person tours: if you’re making a trip to Austin, I’ll help coordinate tour appointments so you can see your top choices efficiently.
Before you apply: be prepared
Each community sets its own screening criteria. Generally, it helps to have ready:
- Proof of income, such as an offer letter for a new job
- Photo identification
- Rental history details
- Pet information, if applicable
If you have concerns about qualifying, such as credit, rental history, or a new job, let’s talk privately. I can’t promise an approval, but I can help you understand your options before you apply.
Please don’t send sensitive documents through a website form. We’ll handle anything private directly.
When you apply
Tell the community that I referred you. Here’s why that matters.
